Sonny Stitt
Alto and tenor
Saxophone battles on stage
Encouraged many
*Sonny Stitt started off playing alto. To separate
himself from Charlie Parker, he switched to tenor.
Often, he and Gene Ammons would have dueling
saxophones during performances. Sonny loved
to match his chops with anybody. When he wasn’t
onstage, he would encourage the young jazz
musicians just coming into the scene.
