J.J. Johnson

Bebop’s first trombone

Master of his instrument

Winding down with Kai

*J.J. Johnson was the first to bring the trombone

into the bebop world.  He played it so well and with

such ease, on his recordings, people thought it was a

valve trombone.  He is to the trombone, what

Dizzy is to the trumpet and Charlie Parker is

to the saxophone.   During the mid 50’s, he and

fellow trombonist, Kai Winding formed a Quintet

and toured all over the country  and in Great Britain.

They reunited in the early 80’s for Jazz festivals in

Japan before Kai left us in 1983.
