Art Pepper

Straight life, west coast jazz

Alto sax, had his own sound

Made several comebacks

*Art Pepper played the alto saxophone.

Despite the dominance of Charlie Parker,

he was able to develop his own sound.

“Straight Life” was the name of his autobiography,

telling the story of his battles with heroin and the law.

Because of so many run-ins with the law and

jail terms, he had many comebacks.  Each one seemed

to be bigger than the last.  Near the end of his career,

his solos were played with more passion and

determination than ever before.
